Random Rant of the day

I'm not quite sure what's going on with this generation and the cell phone thing, but it's like they're afraid to be left alone with their own thoughts for even the length of a bus ride, or a car ride, or the walk from the engineering building to the math building, for crying out loud. Or my (sarcasm here)absolute favorite -- the length of time it takes to pee in a public toilet stall!!

An they have the ring tones up so loud even I can hear them, across a noisy restaurant.  And they all SHOUT private stuff into them.  I am frequently horrified at the things I am forced to listen to in the checkout.

Okay, now it's out of my system, maybe i won't have to say it to some young person who will roll his or her eyes at the backwards little old lady, always going on about "in my day..."

Because, generally, I love the whole idea of cell phones and their convenience.  I feel really excited to have lived from a time where not everyone I knew even had a phone in their house, to where everyone has a phone in their pocket.

It's the whole lack of privacy and solitude I regret.

so's like... I despise cells. and still i find myself answering in the bathroom stalls. one of the things that helped me recently to cut the addiction was that I quit cold-turkey in January. Another thing though that I bet does make a huge difference is whole issue of privacy, read an article in Time basically postulating that the new generation is very much aware that Big Brother is in on everything. Our whole concept of privacy is thus all screwy. In fact I think you're closer to the truth on the whole "they're afraid to be alone with their thoughts". We literally are a generation thats being taught that the idle moment alone is a moment wasted. We must always be multi-tasking. Hmm thats entirely too much to leave here... SORRY!!!

I agree. Your generation (your age group, anyway) has grown up with cameras everywhere, and every minute of every day being accounted for. Big Brother is every where. Which I think would make privacy so much more precious, but people seem to be ready to just throw it out with the bathwater. You've made me think, and I'm going to post about this.
