I went to Mass with Mark Sunday night. Our church has a custom that I've never seen anywhere else.  While they are passing the basket for offerings around to the grownups, little kids from all over the sanctuary come out and bring their can of beans or box of macaroni or rice or whatever, to put in the big basket up front for the food pantry.  Some are so small a parent has to hold their little hands.  I saw a daddy carrying an infant as a three year old lead him. I don't care who you are, you can't not be moved.  And all the little guys are learning that giving is a natural part of life, from a time before they really even understand exactly what they're doing.  Every time, I don't care how many times I've seen it, it makes my breath catch in my throat.

The greatest gift a parent can give a child is the ability to become independently happy.

And the greatest gift a child can give a parent is exercising that ability.
