Guppies

Remember those cute little fish that are born pregnant and so easy to raise?  At least that's how I remember them from years ago when I last had a tank.  Evidently they are not as hardy as I recall.

Thomas and I have a well established, well filtered, well aereated 35 gallon (30 gal actual water vol.) community tank.  Ammonia is 0 ppm and pH is 6.8.  We have 10 tetras, a rasbora, 2 minnows, and 3 tiny dwarf bottom feeders, some sort of catfish, I think.

Over the weekend, a week ago, we added 6 guppies.  4 (2 male, 2 female) on Friday, from a specialty aquarium shop, and 2 (a pair) on Sunday from PetSmart.  By Monday, one of the Friday fish (male) was dead.  By Friday, I was down to 3 surviving fish -- the male from PetSmart, and a pair from the shop.  This morning, the female is dead, and her male is on the bottom, and will be dead before noon.  There are absolutely no signs of fungus, or any marks at all.  No warning, except they spend their last few hours with their tails seemingly locked, and trying to swim along the bottom.

I'm at quite a loss.

Well!  We finally moved on to the Happy part of the Happy Birthday.  We went to Lowe's to get one of my presents (DO NOT LAUGH!  There are lots of good things at Lowe's) and went from there to Chili's, where I began the wine portion of the evening.  Finally, the migraine completely went away.  I should have had Chili's Molten Chocolate Cake and a couple of glasses of wine for breakfast.

Over all, it's been a good birthday.  Started a little melancholy, what with the dregs of Faye dripping through here, and all.  But improved.

Thomas and I went to the Aquarium Shop and bought 7 new fish, including 2 pair of guppies.  Beloved gave me an excellent big mug from the Shenandoah National Park, and a snowman ornament (snowpeople are something of a weakness of mine, having never lived anywhere where there was enough snow to make one, with the exception of one winter in Cincinnati) and I hung him from the mantle (the snowguy, not Mark).  The snowpeople are allowed to stay out year 'round.

Are you sure it's not Monday?    Since Thomas just left yesterday to go to TN It seems like it ought to be Monday.  Yes, I casually said Thomas to TN, as if it's no big deal.  But inside I'm doing the jumpy up and down thing.  He's just having a breakthrough this summer.  I feel myself getting lighter and lighter every day.  I can already tell that he's going to need a lot less support and supervision this fall that I was expecting to have to do.

Now, I just need to figure out what I want to be, now that I'm grown up.  I've got another 40-50 years i need to keep myself busy during.

And the dogs, cats, finches, and aquarium are just not quite doing it for me.

And housework is like being punished, so not that.  In fact, I learned this summer, (Thanks mom!) how to get out of ironing Mark's work shirts. And washing them, for that matter.  I take them to the dry cleaner, where they launder (not dry clean) them, and press them better than any human can.   $1.20 per shirt.  Worth every penny.  Hey, I'm saving all that electricity the iron uses (which must be a lot, because every time it cuts on the lights in the room dim) and all that wash water, and electricity for the dryer....  But most importantly, I'm not ironing.

I repeat, the only thing domestic about me is that I LIVE in a house.

Really, the problem is that there are too many possibilities.

I could become an advocate for Autistic kids and their parents in IEP meetings, and other dealings with the school system.  For free, or for money.

I could volunteer full time for the local ASA chapter.  Trust me, it's easily a full time job for 3 people.

Or, I could make my Dad (step) really happy and run the branch office down here in AL.  They already actually set up an office, unmanned, the drawback being it's almost 2 hrs. from my home.  But I wouldn't have to go down there every day.  The real work that I'd need to take care of could mostly be taken care of from home, thanks to phone forwards, internet, etc.  That would be the most profitable for me, I think. I'm just not sure I want to work that much.  I still think my ideal job would be part time in a bookstore.  Enough hours to get the employee discount, but not so much I still couldn't have fun with my beloved.

So, that's my random brain, going round and round.

Going home this coming weekend!  In fact, leaving Thursday from work.  Expect to be with my darlin' not later than 9pm, 7/10/8.  That would be 71 hours from now.  The countdown starts.

AND!  Thomas thinks he will be comfortable coming back by himself!!  YAY!!  This is incredibly great for two reasons.

1.  I get to stay home!  It's been fun up here, but I'm starting to really miss Mark, and be a little homesick.  And, I've just about worked my way out of a job.  I've gotten lots of things taken care of, and now I'm just cleaning out old files to get drawer room.  And answering phones, handling emergencies, etc.

2.  Thomas is gaining confidence!  He was definitely not willing to be up here by himself when this all started, June 1.  I not only had to be in town, I had to be in the building.  Then, he got used to me staying at the house.  Now, he's so comfortable that I can be in another state.  This is such incredible improvement in Thomas's abilities to function socially that I wouldn't believe it if I weren't here to see it.

and a bonus:

3.  If I'm staying home to take care of them and make sure they get a good start in life, Thomas and I can actually buy fish to go in our Aquarium!!  We bought plants last time we were home, and they've had time to take good root.  So, fishies!

We finally did it.  We quit talking and shopping and Thomas and I went and bought the Nissan Versa Hatchback!  Automatic, continuously variable transmission.  You never even feel the gears change, much less have to worry about changing them yourself.  Sapphire Blue.  I think I'm going to call it Nellie.

Christmas shopping is going fairly well this year.  Not done, but moving along, with ideas for almost everyone but one Aunt.  Bought Christmas ornaments for all the nieces and  nephews on my side.  They'll be bored with them, but I generally never get the right thing anyway.  Except for last year when I bought that pink feather boa for Princess. And I went to a lot of trouble to try to pick something wonderful for each kid.  Well, and Mason loved the little science gadget I got him.   So, 2 out of 10.  So this year I went for easy.

The last few days we've been taking care of our friends' cats, fish, and turtle while they went off for a late vacation.  It's been fun.  Of course, the problem is that now Thomas wants an aquarium.  And, so do I, sorta.

Where the heck have I been?  It's been busy busy busy.

The Alabama Strings Teachers Asooc. Honors Strings Orchestra Festival took up all one weekend, the 1st-3rd. It was fairly incredible.  Young people from all over Alabama came.  They saw the music for the concert Thursday night for the first time, for 2 hours.  Then they spent all day Friday and Saturday morning rehearsing, studying, and playing music games.  Then on Saturday afternoon, they performed.  I was just bowled over.  I could not even emagine that they could sound that good.  I'm not sure now what all those other instruments tey have in an orchestra are for.  Just kidding, of course, but just with Violins (playing two different parts), violas, cellos, and a bass you get an incredibly beautiful, complex sound.  I have an album of photos, at:

Then the next weekend was the field trip to the TN Aquarium that I wrote about. My semi-daughter Rhiannon took all the lovely pictures for me.  There are a lot of beautiful photos of jellies and such. Rhiannon retains the copyright on everything, however.  While she is fine with sharing them online she would like them not to be reposted or linked to or sold.  Thanks.

And of course, this was all worked into the usual busy schedule of school, and a little socializing, and cooking (well, microwaving), and all that stuff you have to keep up on.

Then the Thanksgiving madness we all get.  Thanksgiving is the one time of the year when people travel hundreds of miles to see people they haven't seen for a year and realize that once a year is way too often.  No, actually I had a good time.  Most everybody was there, and of course the food is always good.  Thomas played violin for everyone. Mat interviewed his Grandpa for two and a half hours.

The Asperger's group that Thomas is in went on an expedition to Chattanooga to the Aquarium, families welcome, so I got Mat  ([profile] iskmiirik) and Rhi to come with Thomas and me (Mark was, of course, in a cave).  There were 17 people in all in our group.  It was just fantabulous. We met at and ate at the Mellow Mushroom, just a block or so from the AQ, then walked down.  I had not been there since they built the new building, "Oceans" and added Penguins there, and added Seahorses in the main building.  We spent our entire "free" time in the Oceans building, then joined everyone else for the Behind the Scenes tour -- very educational, and fun too. Then we took some group photos, and the group split up.  We went back to see the Sea Horses, since we hadn't even got to the main building yet!  Then a tour through the gift shop, dinner at a Cracker Barrel, and finally home, exhausted.  Even tho I wore the comfortable shoes, my feet, knees, and back hurt.  I'm just not used to standing all day anymore.  But it was worth the tired.  And the getting up way too early to drive up there.  Plus it was a real treat to spend the day with Mat and Rhi.  We never have time to relax with them anymore.  Hardly ever even see them.  whine whine.
