I've been in and out of Tennessee several times over the last few months.

I'm becoming a business office down here.  A north Alabama  branch of my parents' company, L. I. Smith & Associates  LISmith.com

Here's a wonderful picture of the office building, which used to be a hospital:Office in winter

My office when I'm there is the glass block stick out area (used to be porch, but was enclosed as waiting area when the building was still a hospital) to the right of the front door.  Upstairs, just to left of the big tree, sticking out over the side entrance and the driveway, is my mother's office.  I got to use that one one of the times I was up there, because she and my dad were at a conference, which was why I was there.  It's a great space.  The squirrels run along the window sills.

DBE means Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, which is important for "brownie points" if you're doing gov. work.  We're a woman-owned (= minority = disadvantaged) company.  Mother owns 52%, another female surveyor who was there at the beginning owns 10%, and my sister and I each own 1%.  Mother's 52% qualifies us as a minority.

I've been to one "pre-bid" meeting here, and handed out my cards and shook hands with people.  One of those people was a rep from a big firm and called the next day to get us to submit a couple of bids on things.  Nothing may come of it, because they have to accept our bid(s), then include it in their bids for the work, and IF they get the job, then we get our part of it.  But it's a beginning.

We drove to Tennessee on Friday afternoon, and got a hotel in Humboldt, and went over to the Pollards to visit until fairly late. Besides the folks, two of my sisters and their families were there, and my brother from California, and the next door neighbors and their 3 kids. Very noisy, with all those kidlings all running around like crazy people. But fun, too. We opened some presents and drank and talked and talked.

Saturday was quite the day. First over to the Pollard's again for Breakfast, and to try to cook some cookies, which never actually got in the oven. Then over to MamaSmith's with the cookie batter for lunch there with all the Smith Clan (MamaSmith, my dad and mother, my two brothers and families, my sister and her family, my aunt and her son, and me and Mark and Thomas, and Mat and Rhiannon -- only 23 people, but eight were under 14). We ate without Mat and Rhiannon, because they got lost and were about an hour and a half late. Then as soon as they got there we let them fix plates and started the opening. The little kids were about to go nuts waiting, and one brother had to leave by 3pm to get to his wife's family's celebration. Lots of cool presents. I think my brother Nathan got the kids their favorite gifts -- everyone got a clear gift bag with the new dollar coins in them. More for the older ones, fewer for the littlest guys. I got everyone under 15 (and Rhiannon) a personalized tree ornament. The my oldest nephew got a pocket knife, and my aunt's boy who is 15 got a tie. Thomas got a giant Manga book. the best gift tho, was Mat's. He had asked for a box of Magic cards, meaning the card game Magic, the Gathering. Which I did get him and he'll open tomorrow. But on Saturday he opened a box of cards that you do magic tricks with. Thomas and I thought it was very cleverly funny.

That evening, We went to the Pollard's 40th Anniversary surprise party. It was really great. My baby sister organized the whole thing, and she used to organize fund-raising events for the Salvation Army in Knoxville, so she knew what she was doing. It was very nice, and still within our budget. She had a geek friend put together a video show from lots of old photographs that not only made my stepmother cry, but made my Dad cry! I wore a dress I bought years ago that looks really great on me (with proper slimming foundations to help) and some of the most fun, silver and black lace looking spike heel party shoes that you have ever seen. I'll try to get a photo.

Where the heck have I been?  It's been busy busy busy.

The Alabama Strings Teachers Asooc. Honors Strings Orchestra Festival took up all one weekend, the 1st-3rd. It was fairly incredible.  Young people from all over Alabama came.  They saw the music for the concert Thursday night for the first time, for 2 hours.  Then they spent all day Friday and Saturday morning rehearsing, studying, and playing music games.  Then on Saturday afternoon, they performed.  I was just bowled over.  I could not even emagine that they could sound that good.  I'm not sure now what all those other instruments tey have in an orchestra are for.  Just kidding, of course, but just with Violins (playing two different parts), violas, cellos, and a bass you get an incredibly beautiful, complex sound.  I have an album of photos, at:

Then the next weekend was the field trip to the TN Aquarium that I wrote about. My semi-daughter Rhiannon took all the lovely pictures for me.  There are a lot of beautiful photos of jellies and such. Rhiannon retains the copyright on everything, however.  While she is fine with sharing them online she would like them not to be reposted or linked to or sold.  Thanks.

And of course, this was all worked into the usual busy schedule of school, and a little socializing, and cooking (well, microwaving), and all that stuff you have to keep up on.

Then the Thanksgiving madness we all get.  Thanksgiving is the one time of the year when people travel hundreds of miles to see people they haven't seen for a year and realize that once a year is way too often.  No, actually I had a good time.  Most everybody was there, and of course the food is always good.  Thomas played violin for everyone. Mat interviewed his Grandpa for two and a half hours.
